Female hair loss or thinning is maybe more common than realised, women begin to have hair loss as they get older, possibly medical conditions, stress, chemical damage to name a few reasons, so hair loss is not just a concern for men. In the age of cosmetic surgery you could ask why few women do not opt for a hair transplant as a solution, or is it because many females do not meet the criteria for a hair transplant.

Women typically have different hair characteristics to men as well as style of hair loss. For men, their baldness is classed as MPB, or male pattern baldness, affecting the top of the scalp whereas the sides and back are immune from this loss. The donor hair around the sides and back can be partially moved to the top, recipient area, where it will continue to have the same characteristics as before and not suffer from MPB. The cause of the loss is chemical known as DHT, created when a naturally occurring enzyme in the body comes together and combines with testosterone.

The female pattern for hair loss is measured on what is known as the Ludwig Scale; typically the thinning hair is all over diffused over the head and not merely at the top like it is with men. This can affect the entire scalp and not simply the top as in MPB, thus can create a problem if there is no stable hair zone to use as a donor. The pattern of loss as said is more diffused but also classically suffering from miniaturisation around the thinning area. Because of the patterning of miniaturisation or loss this can make many fewer woman hair transplant candidates compared to men.

Due to the nature of this hair loss it is important for a personal consultation and correct assessment to be made, measurements of the typical donor area for density and signs of miniaturisation. Then the extent of the thinning is to be assessed against the suitable donor supply and calculate not only that this thinning can be successfully treated but for potential future loss.

For a full and detailed assessment of your situation if you have not done please email your pictures and details of your hair loss history to either info@bhrclinic.com or your Patient Advisor.
